YA-Detailed, full-page, full-color photographs draw readers' attention, and the entertaining first-person narration provides them with the facts about a marine mammal returning from the brink of extinction. Paine speaks of otters in general and of the specific species, both in the wild and in captivity. The first half of the book examines the sea otter, its habitat, diet, and way of life. The second half is a discussion of the effects of humans and their pollution on these creatures. The index makes it possible to locate specific information, but the author's obvious love of these animals results in more reading than most report writers may plan on.
