Item description from seller

Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is one of the great works of historical scholarship and literature, tracing the history of the Roman Empire from the age of the Antonines in the second century through the fall of Constantinople in 1453. First published between 1776 and 1789, Gibbon's monumental history combines formidable scholarship with an elegant and often sharply critical narrative style, and has remained continuously in print for more than two centuries. Offered here is the complete work in seven compact volumes from The World's Classics series, attractively presented in uniform black limp leather bindings with gilt decoration and map-patterned endpapers. The World's Classics: The History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, by Edward Gibbons. In 7 volumes, complete. Published by Grant Richards, London, 1903-1904 (Vols I-IV), and Henry Frowde, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, New York and Toronto, 1904-1906 (vols V-VII). A good set of compact black limp leather hardbacks, with gilt tooled emblem to front cover and elaborate gilt tooling to spine. The spines are a little worn with some rubbing and scuffing, and with signs of wear along head and tail of spines. Boards with a few scuffs and bumps, but a presentable set. Volumes with some offset spotting to endpapers, which feature map designs, but text is generally bright and clear. With gilt top edge to text block. Text in English. Dimensions: each volume approx 159mm high x 110mm wide x c. 32mm deep. Weight: approximately 1980g (the set - unpacked).…
