the latest dated matter I can find is some US ships being transferred to the Royal Navy in 1941, and a page inserted after the book had gone to press reporting the latest British Empire, Royal New Zealand Navy, Japan and United States losses showing they were still at it, this puts publication between 1942 and 1945, the updated fifth edition, a small, thick landscape-format (seascape-format) book (118x150mm with 60mm-wide spine), xx,724pp, [I am not counting all the drawings and photographs of ships or giving their tonnage, or telling how to build a battleship!], inserted pages in colour: 2 of Ships' Badges, 3 on Commisioning or Masthead Pendants, 3 on Alphabetical flags, International Codes, etc., one of Medal Ribbons, 4 on Naval Ensigns of the world, and, recommending this book to anyone who still chases sailors, numerous black and white illustrations on how to distinguish the admiral of the fleet from the midshipman, etc., publisher's boards, title gilt on spine, dw seriously tatty with bits missing.
