Write It: The NRMP Personal Statement Workbook

As a fourth-year medical student, you know what comes next: the NRMP Match. For the bulk ofyour residency application package, your accomplishments will boil down to objectivenumbers—test scores, grades, and class rank. Though these hard stats are important, unfortunately, they do not reflect you as an individual. By contrast, your personal statement—theonly subjective piece of your application truly within your control—is your one chance to tellprogram directors who you are and why they should hire you. Yet for many, writing theirstatement is daunting and is far too easy to gloss over amid the tidal wave of stats. While the 2018 NRMP Program Director Survey shows that your USMLE Step 1 score remainsthe single most important factor in securing a residency interview, your personal statement ranksfifth out of almost three-dozen factors. In fact, a stellar statement could mean the differencebetween Matching with your first-choice program and scrubbing into SOAP.Luckily, Write It is here to help. In this book, Dr. Myers Hurt, a board-certified physician andformer University of Texas faculty member, outlines a step-by-step approach for writing anexceptional statement that will make you stand out. With his engaging blend of sound advice andlight humor, Dr. Hurt’s methods will help you land the residency that’s perfect for you.
