Writing Activity Book

The first in a new series of activity books which use games and puzzles to explore themes and topics relating to past cultures. Writing supplies vital evidence for historical events, and today most of us take written communucation for granted, but how, when and where did it come to be invented? The answer is in no time or place. Separate writing traditions developed in the ancient Near East, Egypt, Mesoamerica and China in different eras. Through activities this book helps children to recognize and try out the diversity of both ancient and modern writing systems, materials and implements; to grasp the differences between pictographic writing and alphabets; and begin to understand the use and significance of literacy, whether in a tiny scribal elite or in the majority of the population.
