The Writings: With the Extant Works of Victorinus and Commodianus

"The Writings: With The Extant Works Of Victorinus And Commodianus" by Tertullian; Victorinus; Commodianus is a late antique Christian collection edited for a Victorian-era library edition. It gathers doctrinal treatises, exegetical works, and didactic pieces that illuminate trinitarian theology, creation, apocalyptic interpretation, and Christian discipline against paganism. On the Sabellians (Dionysius of Rome) defends the Son as begotten, maintains a true Trinity, and argues for the monarchy of the Father, stressing unity of God. A fragment on the Creation of the World (Victorinus) offers an allegorical Genesis, linking the six days to cosmic order and time, identifying Christ with the Word/Wisdom and showing creation and salvation converging in the nativity. Commentary on the Apocalypse of John (Victorinus) provides a chapter-by-chapter allegorical reading of Revelation, mapping its images to Old and New Testament prophecies and emphasizing Christ’s lordship and the saints’ ultimate vindication. The Instructions of Commodianus, a long acrostic poem, attacks pagan gods and prescribes strict Christian ethics: modesty, chastity, monogamy, poverty of dress, care for the poor, steadfastness in persecution. The volume, with introductions and scholarly apparatus, presents late antique polemics as tools for orthodoxy, moral formation, and scriptural interpretation.
