Synopsis
A gathering of many unpublished writings by Handy Writers Colony founder and teacher Lowney Handy and her students from public archives and personal collections. Several students at the Colony, which existed from to , published significant fiction, including authors James Jones, Tom Chamales, Jere Peacock, John Bowers and Jon Shirota. Still, a number of the students works were unpublished but of high quality. It is a collection that reflects the literary talents of several of the Colonists and the personal vision of a remarkable, unpredictable teacher.
About the Author
Retired University of Illinois professor George Hendrick, who served as the first president of the James Jones Literary Society, edited TO REACH ETERNITY: THE LETTERS OF JAMES JONES. Helen Howe taught American literature, composition and creative writing at Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Illinois, before retirement. Her husband, Tinks, was a childhood friend of James Jones. Don Sackrider, a retired airline captain, was born in Robinson and became the second student in the Handy Colony after James Jones.
