The Written Word or the Contents and Interpretation of Holy Scripture Briefly Considered

The Written Word Or The Contents And Interpretation Of Holy Scripture Briefly Considered by Samuel Gosnell Green. This 1870 volume presents a concise, foundational guide to how to read and interpret the Bible. Green distinguishes revelation from inspiration, arguing that while God has spoken, the method and form of His speech are to be understood by studying the Scriptures themselves rather than relying on preconceived notions. The work surveys the Bible’s origins, its prophetic and covenantal components, the relationship between the Old and New Testaments, and the authority of Scripture in the face of tradition. It defends the divine guardianship of the Scriptures, addresses how to study the Bible, and emphasizes a spiritual understanding that arises from a responsive heart. Written primarily for Sunday School teachers and thoughtful readers, it champions unity in Scripture, Christ-centered interpretation, and the Bible as the world’s book guiding knowledge, faith, and life.
