Star Prairie was both old and new. The old was typified by the Prairie House, a sprawling redbrick structure with high windows and doors, as though material and labour had cost little when it had been erected.

Opposite was the Palace Hotel, a new barn-like frame structure on which the glaring pint seemed barely dry. When Bob Landwell hit town he soon realised that this was to be no quiet homecoming.

The first question he had to decide was whether he could trust Slim Jim Johnson. He had to confide in someone, and he did not know who.

In no time at all Landwell found that the present was as eventful and as exciting as the past had been, and he was soon involved in stage robberies, a wold bear and a collection of desperados who'd been having things for their own way for longer than was good for anyone else.
