Mercedes Prescott has spent enough afternoons in the Late Room to know how this goes — until the day Dr. Zhang leads her, her twin brother Ben, and four unlucky classmates down through Meridian Academy’s basement to sort decades of forgotten storage.

What they find isn’t supposed to be there: a bricked-up gap behind an old supply room, a missing room number where one should be, and a stone archway carved with words no one can explain. The grown-ups have rules. The kids have curiosity. Neither one wins outright.

By the time the chalk marks go up on that wall, Mercedes, Ben, Lucy, Ethan, Sam, and Alex have learned two things: some questions really are for the next generation to ask — and once you start looking, you can’t un-see the seams in a place you thought you knew.
