THE YEAR OF THE FIRE tells the story of farm life near Fremont, Michigan, in the 1940s from a child s point of view. Five-year-old Louie meets disaster when he is burned playing with a bonfire in the spring of 1941 on his family's farm. His large family, bustling with humorous and exciting experiences, helps his recovery to be anything but boring. The book tells the story of a family of nine as they butcher a hog, thresh wheat, collect maple sap and care for baby chicks. These and many other humorous, as well as educational, events are told in story fashion.

About the Author
I was born in Fremont, Michigan, in 1936. I attended Brookside School in the country through the fourth grade. I then attended Fremont Christian School and later graduated from Fremont Public High School in 1954. I graduated from Western Michigan University in 1964 and later got my Master Degree also. I taught elementary school and taught grades 4th-6th for 31 years in Western Michigan. I retired in 1995. From 1992 to 2000, I served as Sheridan Township Treasurer. My youngest daughter, Becky, encouraged me to write the story of my childhood, so THE YEAR OF THE FIRE, DOG DAYS ON THE FARM, and PUPPIES AND PET CROWS came to be. My wife, Verla, and I have two daughters, a son and eight grandchildren. We now live at Fremont Lake in Western Michigan.
