Year Zero: A Science Fantasy Novel (Paperback or Softback)

It's 1999, and most of the world's computers, according to common belief, are set to regard the coming year as "Year Zero" rather than 2000. The Devil certainly appears to think so, and is planning an apocalypse of evil for New Year's Eve. Unfortunately, Molly, who's having a hard enough time just trying to stay clean and get her kids back from Social Services, becomes accidentally entangled in the Devil's scheme. Her potential allies--Elvis, various fallen angels, little gray men, Britain's Men in Black, the masterminds of Peaslee Pharmaceuticals, and "sanity"--all prove impotent to help her out. It looks as if Molly's going to have to frustrate the Devil's plans all by herself--but it certainly won't be easy! A grand science-fantasy adventure!

"From a darkly humorous tale of the power of words (Death and the Librarian) to a never-before-published response to events of September 11 (Ilion), Friesner's 12 stories illustrate the author's acutely sensitive vision of wonder in the everyday world... Known primarily for his 'Star Wars' novels... Zahn's short stories also deliver strong plots and memorable characters... Zebrowski's many novels (e.g. Macrolife) mark him as a visionary as well as a master of hard sf. The ten short stories collected in In the Distance provide a benchmark of his creativity... the author expands his concept of the human condition to embrace the stars. Part of Five Star's continuing commitment to showcasing the short fiction of the genre's most prominent author's, these three volumes belong in most libraries where short sf is popular."

"Four more titles in Five Star's new series (God Is an Iron and Other Stories/ Generation Gap and Other Stories/ The Lady Vanishes and Other Oddities of Nature/ Suppose They Gave a Peace and Other Stories) of short fiction by noteworthy sf authors offer a variety of tales that illustrate the depth and staying power of the genre...Most of the stories in these volumes have only appeared in periodicals. Libraries wishing to augment their sf or short fiction collections should consider any of them."

"All in all, Year Zero is a sprawling fun-fair of a book, full of wild and weird rides, and the music never stops. It reminds me of Michael Moorcock at his very best, with the scientific nous of Isaac Asimov thrown in for stamps. It harks back to the glorious heyday of New Wave writings in the 60s and 70s, before it all became inscrutable, when writers of serious intent could have fun. And make no mistake, this is a novel of serious intent. It is a celebration of humanity, triumphant in the face of all the forces of lightness and dark that attempt to render it more or less than human. Ultimately, it is a story of love. It has no platitudes about love conquering all. It is gritty stubbornness that conquers all, in fact. What it does say is that love doesn't give up, even shot and bleeding, love doesn't give up. It's pretty worthwhile to say that."
