About this Item
Mary Anne Barker's memoir of her life travelling around South Africa. Lady Barker, otherwise known as Mary Anne Barker, moved to New Zealand with her second husband, Frederick Napier Broome, in 1865. Here she became a journalist, becoming a correspondent for "The Times", and publishing her first book in 1870, "Station Life in New Zealand". When her husband was appointed Colonial Secretary of Natal in 1875, they travelled to Mauritius, Trinidad, Barbados, and Western Australia. Lady Barker used her experiences during this time to write "A Year"s Housekeeping in South Africa". With a frontispiece and eight further plates. With the bookplate of J Brocklebank to the front pastedown, with the family crest and motto 'God Send Grace'. Bookplate is designed by Charles William Sherborn. Most likely to be the bookplate of Sir John Montague Brocklebank, the 5th Baronet. Sir John was also a rather apt cricket player, he played for numerous teams including Cambridge and Bengal. Subscription library label to the bottom of the front board, "Potter"s Subscription Library. William Potter, Stationer, Printer, Account Book Maker & Paper Stamper. 30, Exchange St East, Liverpool". In the original publisher"s cloth binding, with a protective plastic wrapper. Externally sound. Fading to the spine. Light rubbing to the joints. Bumping to the head and the tail of the spine and the extremities. Some marking to the boards. Bookplate to the front pastedown, "God Send Grace. J Brocklebank". Subscription library label to the bottom of the front board, "Potter"s Subscription Library. William Potter, Stationer, Printer, Account Book Maker & Paper Stamper. 30, Exchange St East, Liverpool". Internally, generally firmly bound. Both hinges have failed with the textblock detached from spine. Pages are bright with the occasional scattered spot. Closed tear to the top of the front endpaper.
