Six Years, Nine Months, 23 Days

In one of America’s most controversial wars, a young man from North Carolina came of age on the northernmost bases of South Vietnam and along the volatile DMZ. Born the son of an automobile mechanic, Marc Helm never imagined his military service as a codebreaker would place him so close to the frontlines in one of America’s most controversial conflicts. But in the chaos of the Vietnam War, every day brought unexpected orders, near-death experiences, and moments that would help shape the course of his life. This gripping memoir takes readers beyond the propaganda-filled headlines and into the heart of the daily realities of our servicemen. With vivid recollections and raw honesty, Marc shares the time he spent serving his country in the U.S. Army — a journey that included unraveling enemy communications, witnessing the harrowing toll of combat, and discovering fleeting moments of love, humanity, and humor amid the darkness.

Six Years, Nine Months, 23 Days is aptly titled for the time Marc spent as an enlisted member of the military. But it is more than a war story; it’s a reflection on resilience, patriotism, and the shared experiences of soldiers across generations and locations; different enemies but similar impact. From transformative challenges to once-in-a-lifetime travel opportunities, Marc’s story offers a deeply personal and profoundly human perspective on service and sacrifice. Where Hollywood would have us believe the big screen portrayals of what life was like for young American soldiers in Vietnam, Marc speaks from the heart to give us the truth without the overglorification or romanticization. This book will allow you to step into Marc’s boots and discover the extraordinary life of an ordinary soldier making the best of his time in what were sometimes the worst of circumstances.
