Yolanda of Cyprus

The plot centers around Yolanda, the young and beautiful daughter of the King of Cyprus, who finds herself caught between love and duty. She is pursued by two powerful men: the noble but somewhat conventional Sir Philip, who seeks her hand in marriage, and the more passionate and charismatic Count Berenger, who challenges her to follow her heart rather than her duty. Throughout the play, Yolanda must navigate the treacherous waters of court politics, her desires, and the expectations placed on her as a princess. As the story unfolds, Yolanda is forced to make difficult choices, and her emotions become entangled in the larger struggles of the kingdom. The play’s tragic climax revolves around the consequences of her decisions, leading to a heartbreaking resolution where love and duty clash, and Yolanda's personal sacrifices reflect the cost of loyalty and honor. Yolanda of Cyprus is a poignant exploration of the interplay between love, power, and sacrifice, with Rice’s poetic dialogue bringing depth to the historical and emotional conflicts of the characters.
