York's Hidden Treasures: The History You Might Have Missed

This book tells the big story of the city of York by exploring the small remnants of past lives. It will tell ancient stories that are a daily part of the modern city, such as the Tudor staircase still in use in an office building, and the medieval gargoyles watching people go by from their perches on the eaves of coffee shops.

York’s story unfolds through six sections. 'Protection' explores how the city has survived centuries of threats through resilient architecture and infrastructure. 'Passageways' examines its snickelways and spiritual routes, both physical and symbolic. 'Looking Down' and 'Looking Up' reveal hidden treasures often missed, from newly uncovered cobblestones to discoveries of ancient settlements and lost churches. 'Past Lives' highlights influential figures whose legacies still shape the city, including the posthumous fame of Guy Fawkes. 'Years of Welcome' turns to modern York, celebrating its pubs, cafés, and communal spaces. All of this rests on deep historical context reaching back to the city’s beginnings.

ANGELA RANSON is a York resident who undertook tour guide training while she earned her PhD in English history, which is when she discovered some of the ‘small treasures’ of the city. Since then, she has started publishing historical murder mystery novels with Sapere Books, which has given her the opportunity to speak to audiences of all sizes about history and writing. She has also worked on the Board of Trustees for the York Literature Festival for four years, organising events, promoting publications, and interviewing authors.
