About this title

Synopsis

The Young Gentleman"s Library: A Repository Of Useful And Entertaining Knowledge is a nineteenth-century didactic compilation intended to form the taste and improve the intellect of ambitious young men. Drawn from classical authorities and historical exemplars, it argues that knowledge serves moral and religious ends: to illustrate the wisdom of nature, to promote the welfare of humanity, and to refine the mind through virtuous habits. The volume is organized into Preface and sections such as The Utility Of Knowledge, The Proper Use Of Knowledge, and The Cultivation Of Science And Literature Not Incompatible With The Pursuits Of Business. It includes portraits of self-education exemplars (Jones, Grotius, and others), essays on the power of habit, perseverance, industry, temperance, and the social affections, and discussions of memory, imagination, and the English language. The work elevates reading, discipline, method, and tasteful cultivation as essential for personal happiness and public virtue, offering practical guidance for personal improvement and social usefulness.
