The Young Ladies' Elocutionary Reader: Containing a Selection of Reading Lessons

The Young Ladies' Elocutionary Reader: Containing A Selection Of Reading Lessons by Anna U. Russell is a mid-19th-century instructional volume designed to train young women in reading aloud through a paired reader of selections and a systematic manual of elocution. It aims to cultivate a healthy, pure, and expressive female voice and to promote confident, refined reading habits as part of moral and domestic improvement. The text links elocution to thought, sentiment, and social influence, arguing that proper voice management—breath control, posture, vocal tone, and articulation—enhances character and communication. Its structure includes a Preface and testimonials, a substantial Principles of Elocution section detailing voice techniques, the relationship between voice and emotion, and the music of the female voice, followed by extensive exercises in various vocal qualities and sample readings. A large miscellany of poems, prose, and reading exercises by authors from Barbauld to Shakespeare provides materials with notes on tone, pace, and expression. The collection is targeted at academies and homes in the American/early Victorian classroom, reflecting ideals of female education, propriety, and moral cultivation.
