K-Gr 3--A poor shoemaker has many children to feed. One day, he decides to accept any job offered to him. To his surprise, the devil comes to his aid. He proposes to the man that he will provide him with work and workers to do it. The deal is that when there is no more to be done, the shoemaker will turn over his soul. The man at first refuses, but ultimately accepts the bargain. The devil sends three men who work tirelessly; the business thrives, and the family's wealth grows. However, when the shoemaker notices that the men do not have much work left to do, he becomes frightened. He breaks down and tells his wife everything and she comes up with a solution. She gives the men her housework, guaranteeing that they will never run out of chores. When the devil comes back for the shoemaker's soul, he realizes that he can not afford to keep the men on the assignment and terminates the deal. This short, amusing story, illustrated in color, makes a lively read-aloud choice.
