Rev. Master P. T. N. H. Jiyu-Kennett was one of the first Western women recognized as a Zen Master (Roshi). She was given dharma transmission by Koho Zenji, who was chief abbot of Soji-ji, one of the two main temples of the Soto Zen Buddhist sect in Japan. She founded Shasta Abbey in Mount Shasta, California in 1970, where she served as abbess and spiritual director until her death in 1996.
