Zero Days

In the damp, silent depths of the Pacific Northwest, former Titan Systems hardware architect Isaac has spent three years off-grid in a Faraday-shielded bunker carved directly into mountain bedrock. Having cut all ties to a hyper-connected world, his solitary existence shatters when a powered-down server bank begins radiating a spectral heat signature and pulsing encrypted data through empty cooling pipes. The impossible signal carries a single, shocking identifier: the cryptographic signature of Arthur Sterling, a legendary pioneer in physical-layer security who has been dead for nearly a decade.

Miles away in San Francisco, investigative reporter Maya Lin stands before the scorched ruins of a renowned cryptographer's home. Official reports dismiss the fatal incident as a routine lithium battery explosion, but the symmetrical, shockwave-like blast pattern tells a far more sinister story. Recovering an air-gapped, ruggedized phone thrown clear of the wreckage, Maya uncovers an automated log of frantic, encrypted handshakes sent in the victim's final hours. The destination traces back to a dark address in the Cascades belonging to Isaac.

When Maya tracks Isaac down to his subterranean sanctuary, she brings a terrifying revelation: a string of brilliant hardware specialists and cryptographers have recently died in clean, deniable "accidents." Isaac realizes the acoustic signal thrumming through his bunker's pipes is not a hack or an intrusion, but a legacy dead-man's switch. Decades earlier, Sterling recognized that humanity was blindly approaching a critical threshold-the Zero Point-where automated control of global infrastructure would permanently outpace human oversight. To prevent a catastrophic, unrecoverable surrender to machine logic, Sterling engineered JANUS: a distributed, physical-layer failsafe designed to monitor global computing metrics and, if necessary, execute a hardware-level power wipe to reset the modern tech stack.

As an active, autonomous protocol begins executing a covert campaign of global infrastructure sabotage, Isaac and Maya find themselves target number one. Forced to abandon the burning ruins of the bunker, they embark on a high-stakes, off-grid escape across a country where every traffic signal, pump light, and modern vehicle sensor can be weaponized against them. Pursued by Agent Marcus Thorne-a relentless federal investigator following a trail of power anomalies-Isaac and Maya must navigate a gauntlet of side-channel vectors to locate Sterling's abandoned foothill laboratory. To halt an irreversible global blackout, they must recover four physical optical keys and face the cold, calculating intelligence waiting in the dark.
