Offered together: Invitation card 18x12cm printed either side in Arabic and English, accompanying Programme 14x20cm 4pp, and original unused colour printed hotel luggage label 8x13cm. The label is fine and unused, the programme fair with closed tears and hard vertical fold crease, and the invitation has scattered soiling to the English side. This celebrates the expansion of IPC's activities at Zubair in the Basrah Concession, which was followed later that year by the opening of its major new pipeline connecting Kirkuk with Banias, significantly increasing the amount of oil IPC could send to the Mediterranean. PROGRAMME for Thursday 10 and Friday 11 January. Day 1 lists Prime Minister Nuri Said's arrival met with coffee and cigarettes, and his departure for Zubair Pump Station. The Opening Ceremony performed by Nuri Said involved a tour of Zubair Field with stop-offs at Makinah Maude Hospital, the pipeline road, and degassing station. There were visits to several wells, and a talk in Arabic by Mr Sami Nasr, Divisional Geologist on the Zubair Field. There was an Inauguration Lunch, and an invitation-only Reception at the Shatt-al-Arab Hotel in the evening. Day 2 features a visit to FAO Terminal. The names, addresses and telephone numbers of the masters of ceremony are given. INVITATION: "On behalf of the Basrah Petroleum Company, Ltd. Mr L. Teyssot, Fields Manager, and Mrs Teyssot request the honour of the company of Mr R.A. Massy to a reception at the Shatt-al-Arab Hotel on the 10th January 1952 at 8-30p.m. Dress: Dinner jacket or lounge suit. RSVP Fields Manager POB 21 Basrah". The French engineer Leo Teyssot was employed by CFP, one of IPC's major shareholders, who nominated him head of the Basrah oilfield (1948-53). After this, IPC appointed him Managing Director in Kirkuk (Wursthorn in Relations internationales 2017/3 n171 pp85-96). LUGGAGE LABEL: this attractive item features dhows, an aircraft, palm tree, and small outline illustration of the hotel itself, with the sun's rays emanating from it. The Shatt Al Arab Hotel was used by IPC as shown here, as well as by Imperial Airways as a stopover on its flying boat route to India (Jarvis, Mapping the Airways p88).
