Observations sur Saint-Domingue by Louis Antoine Esprit Rallier offers a crucial perspective on the tumultuous events in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) during the late 18th century. Written by Rallier, a deputy of Ille et Vilaine and member of the Council of Ancients, this work provides firsthand insights into the political and social complexities of the period. Published in 1797 amidst the French Revolution and the Haitian Revolution, Rallier's observations shed light on the challenges faced by the French colonial administration and the growing unrest among the enslaved population. His analysis offers valuable context for understanding the factors that led to the Haitian Revolution and the subsequent establishment of Haiti as the first free black republic. This historical account is essential for scholars and readers interested in colonial history, the French Revolution, and the history of Haiti. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
