About this Item
16th century engraving on a copper plate; A scene of violence debauchery and war, presumably Mars the God of war races across the skies in his chariot drawn by hounds, with scenes of assault, murder and fighting. The print has been trimmed close very thin border on two sides, but image clear of any stains and or fading or dirt. The engravers initials in image at base, the artists name mis-spelled "Meemskerck" on chariot frame but also initialled lower right again with an "M" was this the correct spelling of his name? Measures: 20 x 25 cm. Undated but c1560. NOTE: * Hieronymous Cock was an etcher and most important publisher of prints in Europe, who transformed the production of printmaking in Northern Europe from individuals working alone to an industry based on division of labour. Known more for his publishing he was also a good artist and produced 62 engravings he etched himself. This will, I assume be one of those 62. At his death he left the most important printmaking business in Europe in Antwerp. Maarten van Heemskerck Was a Dutch painter who in 1572 produced a series of engravings of "Wonders of the World", but mostly his reputation was for portrait and religious paintings. Scarce print with his association. Seller Inventory # A265
