A bird of prey of the Hawk family, belonging to the genus Buteo and related genera. - The Buteo vulgaris is the common buzzard of Europe. The American species (of which the most common are B. borealis, B. Pennsylvanicus, and B. lineatus) are usually called hen hawks. -- The rough-legged buzzard, or bee hawk, of Europe (Pernis apivorus) feeds on bees and their larv[ae], with other insects, and reptiles. -- The moor buzzard of Europe is Circus [ae]ruginosus. - Secretary Bird is a large African bird of prey (Sagittarius serpentarius) with long legs and a crest of quills at the back of the head. Secretary Bird, called in allusion to the tufts of feathers at the back of its head, which were fancifully thought to resemble pens stuck behind the ear. A large long-legged raptorial bird (Gypogeranus serpentarius), native of South Africa, but now naturalized in the West Indies and some other tropical countries. It has a powerful hooked beak, a crest of long feathers, and a long tail. It feeds upon reptiles of various kinds, and is much prized on account of its habit of killing and devouring snakes of all kinds. Called also serpent eater. - Owl are any species of raptorial birds of the family Strigid[ae]. They have large eyes and ears, and a conspicuous circle of feathers around each eye. They are mostly nocturnal in their habits. Some species have erectile tufts of feathers on the head. The feathers are soft and somewhat downy. The species are numerous; Barn owl, Burrowing owl, Eared owl, Hawk owl, Horned owl, Screech owl, Snowy owl. Approximate Overall Size: 7 X 10 1/2 inches (18 x 26.5 cm) CONDITION: Suitable browning from age with spotting & soiling otherwise still in Very Good Condition.
