This map, labeled "New Driving Map of Philadelphia," is an 1888 representation of the city and surrounding areas, created by George F. Cram, a well-known American cartographer of the time. It focuses on Philadelphia, showing the dense urban grid of streets with the central part of the city prominently detailed, featuring recognizable road patterns radiating outward from the city center, reflecting the city's well-planned layout, and many areas labeled with street names and districts. The Schuylkill River runs vertically down the center-left of the map, dividing the city with West Philadelphia on one side and Center City along with South Philadelphia on the other, while the Delaware River to the east separates Philadelphia from New Jersey, forming a natural boundary between the city and Camden, NJ. The bottom-right portion shows parts of New Jersey, including Camden and Burlington counties, highlighting transportation routes linking Philadelphia to the rest of the state, and the map extends into the western suburbs of Philadelphia, showing less densely populated areas and early suburban developments as the city was expanding during the late 19th century. The map reflects the main roads used for horse-drawn carriages or early automobiles, with several rail lines and train routes marked, which were crucial to Philadelphia s growth, connecting it to New York, Baltimore, and other major cities. It uses clear lines and labeling to show important roads, rivers, and boundaries, with typography and color choices typical of late 19th-century American maps, featuring pastel hues marking different sections of the city and surrounding regions. This map was likely created for practical use, helping people navigate the expanding transportation networks in and around Philadelphia, perhaps for commercial or personal travel, reflecting the urban development, transportation infrastructure, and growth of the city during a time when it was rapidly industrializing and expanding its suburban areas.
