Blank on Reverse Side This historical, antique color map from 1894 showcases the Roman Empire in the 2nd century, a phase of ancient Roman civilization characterized by an autocratic form of government. The map provides a detailed view of the local topography of the empire during this period. The Roman Republic, which preceded the empire, had been severely weakened by conflicts, including the struggle between Gaius Marius and Sulla, and the civil war between Gaius Julius Caesar and Pompey, resulting in the death of hundreds of senators. The Roman Senate was subsequently refilled with loyal supporters of the First Triumvirate, and later, the Second Triumvirate. The transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire was completed by Octavian, later known as Augustus, when he defeated his rival Mark Antony, marking the end of the gradual subversion of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.
