In 1894, Halle an der Saale was a bustling city in Germany with a population of around 200,000 people. It was known for its salt production, manufacturing, and as a center for education and culture. The city was home to several important industries, including chemical manufacturing, machinery production, and publishing. The University of Halle-Wittenberg's Institute of Agricultural Sciences was founded in 1894, establishing the city as a leader in agricultural research and education. Halle was also a vibrant cultural center, with a rich musical heritage and the newly opened Halle Opera House providing a venue for performances. Transportation in Halle was primarily by horse-drawn carriage and train, with the first electric tram line having been opened in 1891. Overall, Halle an der Saale was a thriving city with a strong economy, a rich cultural heritage, and a growing population, poised for continued growth and development into the 20th century.
