This 19th-century steel engraving reproduces "The Rake’s Progress – Plate V – Prison Scene," after William Hogarth’s celebrated moral series published in 1735. The scene portrays Tom Rakewell’s final descent into despair inside a debtors’ prison after squandering his inheritance through gambling, luxury, and vice. Hogarth fills the gloomy interior with chaotic emotional drama as creditors argue, inmates scheme, and grieving companions react helplessly to Rakewell’s collapse. Symbolic details including discarded papers, scientific devices, and prison clutter reinforce themes of failed ambition, moral ruin, and social decay in Georgian England. The engraving demonstrates strong line work and tonal depth characteristic of Victorian steel engraving. Condition appears very good overall with moderate age toning, scattered foxing, and light edge wear consistent with antique 19th-century paper, while the engraved image remains crisp and highly displayable. Approximate Image Size: 6 ins x 5 ins. Approximate Overall Size: 12 ins x 9 ins. CONDITION: Very Good Condition. Image is clean, clear, sharp with beautiful detail and in Very Good Condition. As scanned. Blank on the back. There is mild foxing. This beautiful print would look great matted and framed. An art supply store can provide you with a selection of frames for old art treasures. This is a GENUINE ANTIQUE PRINT. It is NOT a modern reproduction, ie. a laser scan, photocopy etc. It is the original from the vintage publication. This print was published on the date mentioned, or circa of the date mentioned at the top of the page. The term 'print' is referred to an image on a piece of paper. The print I have for sale, like many antique maps prints that you see online, originate from an antique, vintage, book or atlas publication. The publication may not always be known. If you have any questions, emails are welcome.…
