About this Item
Copperplate engraving on a thin rather flocky verge type hand laid paper. Watermark not visible. We had the paper assessed by expert as early to mid 17th c. on paper. Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 28.7 x 21.5 cm. The image size is ca. 28.1 x 21.1 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 11.3 x 8.5 inch. The image size is ca. 11.1 x 8.3 inch.Plate 79: Hunting for finches using nets. (Bottom latin text: 'Planior aequato cum facta est area tergo .') This rare antique copperplate engraving originates from: 'Venationes ferarum, auium, piscium. Pugnae bestiariorum: & mutuae bestiarum.' The first recorded issue was dated 1578 and published in Antwerp by Phillip Galle with 104 plates. We believe this print to be from a 1636 edition published by Joannes Galle. Other 17th. c. editions exist by Nicolaes Visscher, Joannes Janssonius and others. Artists and Engravers: This plate does not have the address of it's engraver. Many plates from this work are engraved by Joannes Collaert after Joannes Stradanus, but other plates are by Cornelis Galle, Carolus de Mallery and others. Joannes Stradanus (Brugge, 1523 - Florence, 1605) or Jan van der Straet, Giovanni della Strada, Giovanni Stradano, Giovanni Stratensis, worked principally in Italy as a designer of cartoons for tapestries. From 1553-1571 he was employed by Cosimo de Medici who commissioned him to make a series of lavish representations of hunting, fowling and fishing for the adornment of twenty rooms in the Palace of Peggio-a-Cajano. These are the designs so magnificently commemorated in the Venationes, blending well-tried renaissance hunting methods with fabulous subject matter drawn from Persia, India and the East. Joannes (Hans, Jan) Collaert (Antwerp, c. 1545 - 1628) was a Flemish engraver, son of Adrian Collaert.Condition: Fine. Beautiful nice dark impression. General age related toning and minimal soiling from handling. Some remains of previous attachment in rear corners. Cut, as usual, just outside the plate marks, which are mostly visible. Corners occasionaly a bit frayed from having been attached to carrier for framing or storage. Keywords: ANTIQUE HUNTING PRINT-FINCHES-COLLAERT-STRADANUSXXX-A2-20. Seller Inventory # eb03018
