About this Item

Mezzotint, coloured in the plate (a-la-poupee) on wove (vellin) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Carle Vernet' after an anonymous artist. Antoine Charles Horace Vernet aka. Carle Vernet (1758-1835) was a French painter, the youngest child of Claude Joseph Vernet, and the father of Horace Vernet. Born in Bordeaux, Vernet was a pupil of his father and of Nicolas-Bernard Lepicie. Strangely, after winning the grand prix (1782), his father had to recall him back from Rome to France to prevent him from entering a monastery. Condition: Very good, given age. Some foxing around and in the image. Tear in lower margin, backed with acid free archival tape. Margins on the front have been treated with crayon to mask the browning of the paper. Remains of card board from previous attachment on rear. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
