This plate shows a portrait of Saint Matthias, he was the apostle chosen by the remaining eleven apostles to replace Judas Iscariot following Judas' betrayal of Jesus and his suicide. The portrait is flanked by Christian symbols, weaponry, a South American Indian, Indian decorations etc. Copperplate engraving on a verge type hand laid paper. Rear blank. Absolutely 100% authentic. Description: This scarse copperplate engraved print originates from: 'Aldernouwkeurigste Verhandelinge der geschiedenissen van het Oud Testament .', published in Antwerp by Cornelis Martinus Spanoghe in 1784 or the companion to this work is 'Aldernouwkeurigste Verhandelinge der geschiedenissen van het Nieuw Testament .', published in Antwerp by Cornelis Martinus Spanoghe in 1783. (translation: Very correct discourse of the history of the Old testament / New Testament. This work contains many engravings and suites of engravings that date back to the sixteenth century, reprinted in 1783-84.Artists and Engravers: Cornelis Martinus Spanoghe (1758-1829), was a Flemish (Belgium) publisher, printer, poet and political writer born in Doel. Many of the plates in this work are engraved by Philippus Galle (1537-1612), Theodorus Galle (1571-1633) or Joannes Galle (1600-1676), all reknown Flemish engravers. This engraving is a copy in reverse from the engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert, Published by Martin van den Enden after Gerard Seghers (Antwerp 1591-1651), originally published ca. 1625-1640. Schelte Adamsz. à Bolswert (Bolsward 1586-Antwerp 1659) was a Dutch engraver. Condition: Excellent. General age related toning and light staining from handling.
