About this Item
The Battle of New Orleans, fought on January 8, 1815, was a crucial and decisive engagement during the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. Led by Major General Andrew Jackson, American forces defended New Orleans against the British Army commanded by Major General Sir Edward Pakenham. The battle took place on the Chalmette Plantation, and Jackson's forces, consisting of a diverse mix of regular soldiers, militia, free African Americans, and even privateers led by the pirate Jean Lafitte, successfully repelled the British attack. The American defenders took advantage of natural and man-made defenses, including earthworks and cotton bales, proving formidable against the Redcoats. The British suffered significant casualties, including the death of General Pakenham. Remarkably, the battle occurred after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, which had ended the war in December 1814, but the news had not yet reached the combatants. The victory at the Battle of New Orleans elevated Andrew Jackson to the status of a national hero and played a significant role in shaping his subsequent political career and the historical reputation of the United States.Published by Johnson Fry & Co.
