RENCHMEN. c1840. ----TITLE: [The Discussion]. ----DESCRIPTION: In this scene, a formally-attired gentleman stands quietly while the laborer leans on his shovel and sets forth his views on the world. ----PUBLICATION DETAILS: 8 �"w x 12 �"h on yellow sheet. Laid paper. Pen and ink. Obtained in rural Eastern France in the 1970s. ----BACKGROUND: Although a few caricatures had appeared during the previous 300 years, it became a widely used form of poking fun at the upper classes and politicians in France (Daumier) and England (Punch magazine) in late 1700s and early 1800s. It quickly spread to America to such artists as Thomas Nash in the mid-to-late 1800s and to Al Hirschfeld and to Mort Drucker (MAD Magazine) in the 1900s. ----CONDITION: 3/8 inch tear lower right side, far from image. Image very good. ----Z8P14.

Luke A Vavra was a map and book dealer using the trade name ?Cartographic Arts? for about 25 years until illness forced him to give up the business a few years ago. He and his late wife Patricia had a web site and participated in Map Fairs and Book Fairs from Boston to Miami and west to Denver. In 2023 Luke re-established this business under the name Luke A Vavra Rare Maps and Books. The firm does not have a brick-and-mortar store but would not mind scheduled visitors.
