Add to basketEdwin Forrest, a distinguished American actor of the 19th century, is notably remembered for his compelling portrayal of Metamora in the eponymous play "Metamora; or, The Last of the Wampanoags." Crafted by playwright John Augustus Stone in 1829 specifically for Forrest, the play unfolds in the early 17th century amidst the colonization of America. Forrest's Metamora, the Native American chief of the Wampanoag tribe, stood out for its physicality and emotional depth. The character, a tragic and noble figure grappling with the encroachment of European settlers, became synonymous with Forrest himself. The success of "Metamora" contributed significantly to Forrest's theatrical legacy, and he even adopted the character's name as a pseudonym in certain contexts. While the play was immensely popular in the 19th century, it is important to approach it with a critical lens in the modern era, considering its portrayal of Native Americans within the cultural context of its time.
