About this Item
The chromolithographic illustration titled "Great-Heart" originates from Pilgrim's Progress and Other Works by John Bunyan, published around 1870 by James Sangster, with the imprint "LEIGHTON, BROS." displayed at the bottom right, indicating the London-based firm known for high-quality chromolithographs during the Victorian era. The print vividly portrays the character Mr. Great-Heart, the valiant guide and protector of Christiana and her children in Bunyan s The Pilgrim s Progress, Part II. He is depicted as a robust, bearded man clad in a gleaming steel helmet and a burnished breastplate over a russet-colored tunic. His gloved hand rests confidently on a round shield, while a sword hilt peeks from behind, emphasizing his role as a steadfast warrior of faith. The background is dark and subdued, contrasting with the boldness of his figure, further highlighting his resolute expression and sense of duty. The chromolithographic process, a popular Victorian technique for producing richly colored prints, brings depth and vibrancy to the illustration, enhancing the heroic aura surrounding Great-Heart. The Leighton Brothers, renowned for their detailed and vivid illustrations, contributed significantly to making literary works visually engaging in this era. pproximate Image Size: 9 x 6 1/4 inches. The process was based on lithography printing on stone, but extended so that a separate stone, each with its own color, was laid on top of the previous one. Thus, the paper sheet was printed on several times before the print was finished. This required both a number of stones and a very precise method for laying the stones.
