About this Item
Amsterdam: Pieter MORTIER, ca. 1704. Large double-page view (21 ¼ x 25 ½ inches; 18 ¼ x 24 ¼ inches plate size) of SAN LEO on the Adriatic coast from Mortier's "Nouveau Theatre d'Italie," an extensive Grand Tour in book form based on Joan BLAEU's designs for his 1663 "Theatrum Civitatum et Admirandorum Italiae." Condition: excellent with full margins and no visible flaws except some scattered foxing; later color. Named after the 4th-century saint, Leo of Montefeltro, the town is situated on the steep slopes of Mount Feretrius (in honor of Iuppiter Feretrius) with a fortress at its peak. Blaeu relied on the eyewitness accounts of his 23-year-old son Pieter (sent to Italy in ca. 1660), a network of collaborators including Carlo Emanuele Vizzani, and the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" to compile his town atlas. Although not present in the "Civitates," the prospect of San Leo (with an 8-wind compass rose in the foreground) reiterates the picturesque compositions of Georg Hoefnagel. Seller Inventory # 6BD0015
