About this Item

An original 1801 caricature on the wily ways of the "Methodists". It has the minister in the pulpit having just warned them of their guaranteed trips to hell. "Hollo' my wigs off G---d--n you catch it you son of a bitch or it will burn to a cinder". (is this the earliest example of this now over used expression of rudeness?). two other comments about the ministers lack of decorum, tips of the 4 corners cut and print backed onto old album paper, part of the lettering along the base line is cut off. Colours still bright and fresh to look at. Measures. 18 x 22 cm approx. *In 1801-02 this caricaturist appeared with a series of prints under the name Giles Grinagain actually mis-spelled "Griagain" on the bottom of the print. And it is believed this was the publisher Samuel Howitt according to online sources. Dates to December 20th 1801 at base of the print. Seller Inventory # 9462
