Charles Grignion, undated (2nd half 18th century). Etching & engraving measuring 5.5 x 10.75 inches (about 14 x 27.30 cm.). Charles Grignion the Elder (1721-1810) was a prolific British engraver, draughtsman and book illustrator (among his many works, he became the first known engraver of a cricket match, in the year 1748). This pictorial window design from the Elizabethan era shows ten Morris dancers; one musician on the pipe and tabor, a friar holding a wreath, a jester holding a mask, and a maypole. The illustration of the window was possibly intended for Bell's edition of Shakespeare's plays (London 1774, 9 vols) for which Grignion engraved several plates. The stained glass window itself is now on display at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. Very good, previously folded. Trimmed, with no margin remaining at head. Seller Inventory # ABE-1728754972537
