About this Item
This is an original pen and ink cartoon by the artist Arthur Moreland (1867-1951) which probably appeared in The Morning Leader Newspaper which he worked for at the time a as a political cartoonist. This artwork which is dated September 2nd 1908 is referencing George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston when in 1908 he was elected an Irish Representative Peer. George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, KG, GCSI, GCIE, PC, FRS, FRGS, FBA (11 January 1859 ? 20 March 1925), styled The Honourable between 1858 and 1898, then known as The Lord Curzon of Kedleston between 1898 and 1911, and The Earl Curzon of Kedleston between 1911 and 1921, was a prominent British statesman, Conservative politician and writer who served as Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905. The Prime Minister Arthur Balfour refused to recommend an earldom for Curzon in 1905, and this was repeated by Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, the Liberal prime minister, who formed his government the day after Curzon returned to England. The artwork which features Lord Curzon having to enter The House of Lords by the side entrance, Arthur Balfour's refusal to recommend an earldom for Curzon in 1905 was repeated by Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, the Liberal prime minister, who formed his government the day after Curzon returned to England done on art card measuring 11 inches by 9.5 inches approx., and is overlaid with a piece of paper which reads. Cartoon of the Day ?The Other Door Please? Lord Curzon of Kedleston [ and Ireland ] Very unpleasant don?t you know, reminds one so horribly of going by the Tradesman?s Entrance. Lord Curzon having applied unsuccessfully to the Prime Minister for an English Peerage, enters the House of Lords as an Irish Representative Peer, in the ongoing course of nature, he will succeed to an English Peerage as Lord Scarsdale, & will still retain his Irish Peerage. He thus enters The House of Lords by the side door. The text was most likely used in the newspaper to accompany the cartoon, The Reverse of the card features another unfinished cartoon by Moreland, again featuring Lord Curzon, the artist has crossed this through, obviously deciding to use the other cartoon instead. Some dustiness to edges else in good condition.
