Original grès émaillé. Glazed stoneware bowl with 2 handles and lid 16 cm diameter .Marais was Jean Cocteau's lover from 1937 to 1947, his muse and longtime friend. After Cocteau's death, Marais wrote a memoir of Cocteau, L'Inconcevable Jean Cocteau, attributing authorship to "Cocteau-Marais". He also wrote an autobiography, Histoires de ma vie, published in 1975.Jean Marais was a French actor and sculptor. Although best known for his work on the silver screen?most notably appearing in Jean Cocteau's 1946 Beauty and the Beast?Marais was an accomplished visual artist, producing numerous paintings and sculptures in tandem with his career in film. His work is primarily figurative, offering stylized depictions of himself, friends, and coded iconography. Born on December 11, 1913 in Cherbourg, France, he left school at 16 to pursue acting and other creative pursuits. Marais' artistic output often coincided with his eventful acting career, beginning when the filmmaker Marcel L'Herbier discovered Marais when purchasing one of his paintings in 1933. He continued to produce sculptures until his death in Cannes, France on November 8, 1998.Provenance: Heinz Rosen. Heinz Rosen was born on July 3, 1908 in Hanover, Germany as Heinz Levi Rosenthal. He is known for his work on Blaue Stunde mit Dalida (1960), Adventure in Rio (1955) and Schlußakkord (1960). He was married to Ilse, Elkins. He died on December 25, 1972 in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. Birth Name: Heinz Levi Rosenthal. He collaborated with Cocteau on the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo production of La Dame à la Licorne, conceived and designed by French artist Jean Cocteau and choreographed by Heinz Rosen.
