Original 1930s gouache, pencil and watercolour painting for a set of Eastern Proverb cigarette cards, this painting titled "To Come To The Riverside Waiting For Fish Is Not Enough; You Must Bring Your Net". Painted on stiff paper which has been pasted to a thin sheet of steel so that it was ready for the printing process. Comes in a basic mount which measures approximately 5 x 7 inches (12.5 x 18 cms). Painted with the intention of being used for a Churchman Cigarette Card. There were quite a few series of Eastern Proverb cigarette cards produced in the 1930s, but there is a chance this painting was never produced. Provenance: This came from Mardon, Son & Hall of Bristol, who were famous for dealing with the art and printing of the tobacco trade. The business flourished after being set up in the Victorian era and was able to employ the best artists available. The detail and quality of their work is incredible. A team of artists would work for several months producing up to fifty hand painted pieces centred around a certain theme and then present it to the client, often Wills Tobacco company who would then authorise the reproduction.
