Hand-colored and uncolored theatrical portrait prints known as "penny plains" and "twopence coloureds" which were collected and often used in toy theaters. The names of the prints originated from the prices each cost to purchase. Published by John Redington (1819-1876). Mr. Palmer was a theatrical star and this was one of his popular roles on the London stage. John Redington ran a shop at 208 Hoxton Old Town, better known today as 73 Hoxton Street. His main business was printing, bookbinding and selling tobacco. He also prepared prints for plays for the toy theatre, more properly known as 'juvenile drama'. Almost all the plays were written specifically for the toy theatre with a few notable exceptions such as Oliver Twist. The stage sets would include trap doors and windows just like the 'real' theatre. Benjamin Pollock took over the business in 1873. Palmer is depicted in Eastern costume, holding out a ring in his extended right hand and a scepter in his left hand. Seller Inventory # 008691
