View of the Imperial Palace in Rome,1853 Copper Engraving

This copper engraving titled "PALAZZO DE’ CESARI in Roma" (View of the Imperial Palace in Rome) offers a romanticized yet architecturally detailed depiction of the ruins of the Imperial Palace complex on the Palatine Hill, Rome. Created by Carl Ferdinand Sprosse (1819–1874), a Leipzig-born engraver known for his finely executed Italian vedute, the work is dated to 1813 and was published in 1853. The print showcases the grandeur of the ancient palatial structures—often attributed to emperors Augustus, Tiberius, and Domitian—looming above lush vegetation, a walled garden, and pastoral figures in the foreground. Massive arches, broken walls, and distinct Roman brickwork are rendered with exceptional linework and tonal shading, capturing both the majesty and melancholy of imperial decay. The print is signed "C. Sprosse sc." at the lower right, indicating his role as engraver. Below the image, the full inscription reads: "PALAZZO DE’ CESARI in Roma." The sky is filled with expressive cumulus clouds, contributing to the sublime atmosphere typical of 19th-century German romanticism in landscape art. The print itself appears to be in excellent condition, with wide margins, minimal foxing, and sharp plate impressions, suggesting it was well-preserved, likely stored flat or archivally mounted. Sprosse's work contributes to the mid-19th-century fascination with classical antiquity and the Grand Tour ethos, serving both as a picturesque souvenir and a scholarly record of Rome's archaeological heritage.
