About this Item
View of Roehampton, in Surrey. Mortlake & Grove Park. THORNTON 1784 old print. Antique copperplate engraved print; Taylor Sc (1784). 15.5 x 23.5cm, 6 x 9.25 inches. Condition: Good. Tight top margin; The image shown may have been taken from a different example of this print than that which is offered for sale. The print you will receive is in good condition but there may be minor variations in the condition from that shown in the image. The print has been cropped from a larger sheet and will be supplied as shown. There are no margins beyond those shown in the image. The borders are incomplete. There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain. It's not entirely clear what this view of "Roehampton" shows, since Roehampton is not on the River Thames, which dominates this view. Given the curvature of the river and the topography, we think that the vew is taken from the west bank of the Thames in Kew looking south east. We think the viewpoint is approximately where the National Archives are now located, roughly opposite St Pauls Church Grove Park, Chiswick on the other side of the river, which we think is the church shown on the left hand side of the view. We think the village on the same side of the river from which the view is taken, ie. to the right of the picture, is Mortlake (with the steeple of St Mary the Virgin Mortlake visible). We think Roehampton is the hamlet shown on the higher ground in the distance. Seller Inventory # P-7-016548
