Winfield Scott was a prominent American military leader who served as a general in the United States Army during the 19th century. He ran for President of the United States as the Whig Party candidate in 1852 but was unsuccessful in his bid for office. During the American Civil War, despite his advanced age, Scott continued to offer his expertise and advice to Union commanders. He retired from active service in 1861, at the onset of the Civil War, and died in 1866 at the age of 79.
