This accomplished portrait study depicts a peasant woman sitting on a rock with a basket of game at her side. The artist has captured the scene in fine detail, drawing attention to the woman's delicate facial features and traditional dress. A particularly interesting element to the painting is the woman's tie-on pocket to the left side of her dress. Situated under the dress and petticoat, pockets were traditionally accessible through a slip of the outer layers of clothing for women in upper classes. In this portrait, the woman lifts her apron to reach into the fabric pocket. The easily accessible pocket was more common amongst working class women, who would use functional pockets to aid their work. Signed and dated to the lower right. Beautifully presented in a late 19th Century gilt frame with beaded reeding and foliate corner details. On paper. Size: Large (30-60cm) Framed: Yes. Seller Inventory # rh428
