Jeff Gottesfeld

Jeff Gottesfeld is the author of TWENTY-ONE STEPS: GUARDING THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER (Candlewick, 2021), illustrated by Matt Tavares, as well as other picture books and works for children, teens, and adults. His new book, HONOR FLIGHT (Candlewick, 2026), again illustrated by Tavares, is about the remarkable free volunteer program that flies aging American veterans to D.C. with Guardians to see their monuments and get the homecoming many never experienced.

Jeff's books explore history, tradition, service, and the meaning and beauty of personal responsibility.

Home is Los Angeles, California, but he has lived the itinerant life of the writer. When not writing, you'll find him in the gym, with a fishing rod in his hands, or reading.

His fantasy epitaph? "That was a decent first draft."
