Born London 1932. Educated St Christopher School, Letchworth, St John's College, Cambridge (MA Geography), and the University of Sheffield (PhD Geomorphology). Subsequently DSc University of East Anglia.
Awards: 1972 Cuthbert Peek Award, Royal Geographical Society, 1995 Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship, 1995 Rockefeller Residency.
