Hugh Cook

Hugh Cook is the author of The Chronicles of an Age of Darkness, a ten‑volume cult fantasy saga praised for its fierce originality, dark humor and wildly inventive world‑building. Blending epic adventure with biting satire, Cook created a world of orks and ogres, wizards and warriors, wandering mountains, magical bottles, pirates, bankers and bureaucrats — all rendered with a sharp, subversive intelligence that set him apart from his contemporaries.

His novels are celebrated for their rich characters, interconnected narratives, and fearless imagination. China Miéville described the series as “extraordinary, underrated, bizarre and hysterical,” while Adrian Tchaikovsky called The Wizards and the Warriors “one of the great triumphs of fantasy fiction… a genuine work of genius on multiple levels.”

Born in England and raised in New Zealand, Cook taught English in Japan and worked across several countries during his life. His fiction — bold, strange, darkly funny and endlessly surprising — continues to attract new readers and stands today as one of fantasy’s most daring and distinctive achievements.
